What Is Gate Valve Casting? &
Why Investment Casting Is the Right Method?
A gate valve casting is a precision-manufactured metal component typically the valve body, bonnet, wedge, or flange produced through an industrial casting process. Gate valves are used across oil & gas, water treatment, chemical processing, power generation, and marine industries to provide full-bore isolation with minimal flow resistance when fully open.
Investment casting (also known as lost wax casting) is the most suitable manufacturing method for gate valve bodies because it allows complex internal geometries, tight dimensional tolerances, and excellent surface finish to be achieved in a single pour eliminating the need for extensive machining or welding. At Invent Cast, we use the silica sol investment casting process, which produces gate valve castings with surface roughness as fine as Ra 3.2 µm and dimensional tolerance to ISO 8062 CT6-CT8.
Compared to sand casting or forging, investment cast gate valve bodies offer superior near-net-shape accuracy, reduced material waste, and consistent batch-to-batch repeatability making them the preferred choice for OEMs supplying regulated or safety-critical industries globally.

Our Gate Valve Casting Manufacturing Process
At Invent Cast, every gate valve body casting passes through a controlled, step-by-step investment casting process designed for zero-defect output:
Wax Pattern & Assembly
Precision wax patterns are injected using high-accuracy metal dies, ensuring consistent gate valve body geometry across every batch. Patterns are assembled on a wax runner system (tree) for efficient cluster casting.
Robotic Shell Building
Our automated robotic shelling system applies multiple layers of silica sol ceramic slurry and stucco to the wax cluster. Robotic control ensures uniform shell thickness on all gate valve body surfaces including internal bores and flanges eliminating the risk of shell cracks during dewaxing.
Dewaxing & Firing
Wax is removed through autoclave dewaxing and the ceramic shell is fired at high temperature to achieve the strength and permeability required for precision metal pouring.
Melting & Controlled Pouring
Metal is melted in an induction furnace and chemically verified before pouring. Controlled pouring temperature and speed minimises porosity, shrinkage, and oxide inclusions in the gate valve casting.
Shell Removal & Cleaning
After solidification, the ceramic shell is removed by vibration and shot blasting. Gate valve castings are cut from the tree, dressed, and prepared for heat treatment.
Heat Treatment
Depending on material and application, gate valve castings undergo normalising, solution annealing, quenching & tempering, or stress relieving enhancing hardness, tensile strength, and corrosion resistance.
Precision Machining
CNC machining of flanges, bores, seats, and mating surfaces to tight tolerances (ISO 2768-mk / IT6). Sealing surfaces are machined to Ra 1.6 µm for leak-proof gate valve performance.
Inspection & Testing
100% visual, dimensional, and NDT inspection before dispatch. Includes CMM measurement, hydrostatic testing, X-ray, and dye penetrant inspection as required.
Quality Testing & Compliance for Gate Valve Castings
Every gate valve casting from Invent Cast is subject to rigorous quality control at each stage of manufacturing. Our inspection and testing capabilities include:
Dimensional Inspection
CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine), vernier calipers, depth gauges, height gauges, go/no-go gauges, and special fixtures ensuring flange faces, bore diameters, wall thickness, and seating surfaces all conform to drawing tolerances.
Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)
Dye Penetrant Testing (DPT), Ultrasonic Testing (UT), and X-ray Radiography detecting surface cracks, internal porosity, shrinkage cavities, and inclusions invisible to the naked eye.
Chemical Composition Analysis
Spectroscopic analysis of 20+ elements for every melt batch, with material test certificates (MTC) traceable to the heat number. Carbon-sulfur analysis available on request.
Mechanical Property Testing
Hardness (Brinell/Rockwell), tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, impact testing (Charpy), and microstructure analysis ensuring the gate valve casting meets the metallurgical requirements of the intended service.
Pressure & Functional Testing
Hydrostatic shell and seat testing, air tightness testing, and gate operation & seating function testing per API 598, API 600, and customer-specific test protocols.
